Understanding Kratom Strains: Red, Green, White and Gold Veins

Kratom comes from Mitragyna speciosa, a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. The most common way to categorize it is by vein color, which is determined by the color of the leaf's central vein at harvest time.
Red vein kratom comes from older leaves with red veins, typically fermented during drying. It is widely regarded as the most traditional and soothing variety, making it a staple in most catalogs.
Green vein kratom is harvested from mid-age plants with green veins, dried under controlled shade to preserve its natural chemistry. Green strains, especially Green Malay and Maeng Da, are prized for their balanced, energizing character.
White vein kratom is picked from young plants whose leaves are still light or white at the vein. Fast-dried indoors, white strains are known for their crisp, bright profile.
Gold and yellow strains are a newer innovation, created through extended sun-wilting or specialized drying that shifts the leaf's chemistry toward a warmer, golden character.
For wholesale buyers, one of the first questions is how much variety the catalog should carry. Customers who buy kratom regularly often rotate between vein colors depending on the time of day and their personal preferences, so a distributor that only stocks a single strain will quickly lose repeat sales. A balanced start is usually three to five strains covering at least two potencies, with the option to expand once you understand what your market asks for most.
Potency is the second decision. Low, medium and high potency reflect the alkaloid concentration of the leaf, which is influenced by growing conditions, the age of the tree and the drying method. High-potency selections like Maeng Da perform well for experienced users, while medium and low strains are approachable for new customers and blend best into retail formulas.
Finally, consider harvest consistency. Vein color can vary slightly between seasons depending on rainfall and sunlight, and a good supplier will hold each harvest to the same visual and lab-tested standards. When you receive a COA that matches the batch number on your box, you can confidently reorder the same strain knowing your customers will get a familiar experience every time. Carrying a mix of all vein colors covering different potencies gives your customers the broadest choice and keeps reorders consistent.
